Pergola Post Spacing and Footing Depth
Pergola post spacing trades material cost against beam span, and footing depth is set by your frost line. Both decisions come before ordering lumber.
A pergola is a genuinely calculable structure — posts, beams, rafters, all countable — which makes it a satisfying project to estimate. Two decisions have to be made before any of that arithmetic matters, and pergola post spacing is the first of them.
The second is how deep the footings go, which is not a design preference at all.
The materials arithmetic
Post count follows the same fencepost logic as a fence line: a run divided into bays needs one more post than the bay count, doubled for both sides.

posts = (bays + 1) × 2
rafters = length ÷ rafter spacing, rounded up, plus one
lumber = beams (2 × length) + rafters × width

How pergola post spacing changes the beam you need
Wider spacing means fewer posts and fewer footings, which is cheaper and looks more open. It also means longer unsupported beam spans, which need deeper or stronger beams to avoid sagging.
Most residential pergolas land between 6 and 10 feet of post spacing as a practical middle ground. Push meaningfully past that and standard dimensional lumber stops being adequate — you move into engineered beams or doubled members, and the saving from fewer posts disappears into the beam upgrade.
The failure mode is slow and permanent-looking: a beam sized for a shorter span sags visibly over a few seasons under its own weight plus the rafters, and there is no fixing it short of adding a post or replacing the beam.

Footing depth is set by frost, not by preference
Pergolas look light, which leads a lot of DIY builders to under-build footings relative to what a permanent post-set structure actually needs.
In any climate with real winter freezing, footings need to extend below the local frost line. Soil above that depth expands and contracts through freeze-thaw cycles, exerting genuine upward force on anything anchored in it. Over a few winters that heaves posts out of plumb, and a pergola visibly out of square is not something you straighten afterwards.

Open lattice or a real roof: two different structures
A traditional open-lattice pergola roof filters light rather than blocking it, and the rafters are the whole roof — no additional material cost.
Adding shade cloth, polycarbonate panels or a solid shingled roof changes the project structurally, not just cosmetically. A solid roof catches wind uplift and snow load in a way an open lattice simply does not, which means the posts, footings and beams all need sizing for that added load.

Attached versus freestanding
An attached pergola ties into the house with a ledger board, which halves the post count and the material cost.
It also introduces the same risk profile as a deck ledger: water intrusion at the attachment point, and a structural connection that has to be flashed and fastened properly into framing rather than just siding. Poor ledger attachment is a well-documented failure mode on decks specifically, and the same physics apply here.
Freestanding avoids the problem entirely at the cost of two more posts and two more footings. For a first-time builder, freestanding is the lower-risk choice.
Rafter spacing and how much shade you actually get
Post spacing is structural. Rafter spacing is almost entirely about shade, and it is where people are most often disappointed.
An open pergola with rafters at 24 inches on centre casts very little shade at midday, when the sun is high and the gaps are wide open. Tightening to 12 or 16 inches produces meaningfully more shade for meaningfully more lumber.
Two other levers matter as much as spacing. Rafters set on edge rather than flat cast a wider shadow as the sun moves off vertical, which is why most pergolas are built that way. And rafter direction decides when the shade lands — running rafters north-south gives more midday shade, east-west gives more shade in the morning and late afternoon.
Decide which hours you actually use the space before settling the layout. A pergola that shades an empty patio at 11am and bakes at 5pm is a common and avoidable outcome.
Wood choice and what it costs later
Pressure-treated pine is the cheapest structural option and needs periodic cleaning and resealing to stay presentable.
Cedar and redwood cost more, resist rot naturally, and weather to grey if left alone — which some people want and others do not. Both are softer than treated pine and easier to work.
If the pergola will be stained or sealed, that is a recurring job rather than a one-off, and the surface area is larger than it looks once every rafter face is counted. Permits and setbacks
Requirements vary. Many jurisdictions exempt small freestanding open-roof pergolas, and many stop exempting them once the structure attaches to the house, exceeds a height or footprint threshold, or gains a solid roof.
A call to the local building department before digging is cheap insurance against modifying or removing a finished structure.
