When to Stain Pressure Treated Wood

Stain pressure treated wood too soon and it peels within a season. Here is the test for whether it is ready, and how much finish the job takes.

A new fence or deck goes up, looks excellent, and the obvious next step is to protect it. Doing that immediately is the most common way to waste a gallon of finish. Knowing when to stain pressure treated wood matters more than which product you buy.

The answer is not a fixed number of weeks, and there is a simple test that beats any calendar.

Why you cannot stain pressure treated wood straight away

Pressure treated wood is manufactured by forcing a water-based preservative into the timber under pressure. It leaves the mill considerably wetter than kiln-dried lumber, and it is often stored outdoors before you buy it.

Stain needs to penetrate and bond into wood fibres. Wood already saturated with water has nowhere to accept it, so the finish sits on the surface instead of soaking in. It then peels, blotches and colours unevenly — usually within the first season, which reads as a product failure and is not.

The water bead test

Skip the calendar. Splash a little water on the wood.

Beads up and sits there — still too wet. Wait.

Soaks in within a minute or so — ready to stain.

Test in several places, including the underside of deck boards and the shaded face of a fence, because those dry more slowly than the sun-exposed faces and will tell you the truth about the board rather than about its surface.

Typical waiting periods run from several weeks to a few months depending on climate, how wet the lumber was when delivered, and how much sun and airflow the structure gets. A fence in an exposed sunny yard in a dry climate may be ready in weeks; the same fence in a shaded, humid site may take a full season.

How much stain the job actually takes

Once it is ready, the quantity arithmetic is straightforward:

surface area  = length × height (× 2 if staining both sides)
coverage needed = area × coats
gallons       = coverage needed ÷ coverage per gallon, rounded up

The coverage figure on the can — often 150 to 300 square feet per gallon — assumes a smooth, uniform surface. Rough-sawn lumber, weathered wood that has become more porous, and heavy grain texture all absorb considerably more. Adjust the coverage input down rather than trusting the label when the wood is rough or old.

One side or both

Staining only the side you see is a common shortcut on a fence, and it leaves the other face weathering unprotected.

For a shared boundary fence this is worth an explicit conversation with a neighbour about who maintains which side, since assumptions here are a reliable source of low-grade disputes. For a deck, the underside of boards is rarely stained and rarely needs to be, but the ends of cut boards absolutely do — end grain drinks water far faster than face grain, and unsealed cut ends are where rot starts.

Seal every cut end as you make it. It costs a brush-dip of finish and prevents the single most common rot entry point.

Solid, semi-transparent or clear

Solid stain sits on the surface like paint, hides the grain, and lasts longest — commonly two to three years between coats.

Semi-transparent lets grain show through, which most people prefer visually, and wears faster — often one to two years, especially on sun-exposed faces.

Clear sealer protects against water without adding colour, and offers the least UV protection, so the wood still greys underneath.

None is objectively better. It is a trade between how much the structure looks like natural wood and how often you want to redo the work. South and west-facing elevations weather fastest regardless of choice.

Prep matters as much as timing

Stain over dirt, mildew or old flaking finish bonds poorly and fails early regardless of how good the product is or how patiently you waited for the wood to dry.

For an existing structure, a cleaner or brightener wash is standard prep. Pressure washing works but wants a light touch — too much pressure gouges softwood and raises the grain, creating a fuzzy surface that then drinks stain unevenly.

Budget both the time and the modest supply cost. Prep protects the stain investment far more reliably than upgrading to a premium product over inadequate preparation would.

Brush, roller or sprayer

The application method changes both how long the job takes and how well the finish holds.

Brushing works the finish into the grain and gives the best penetration and the longest-lasting result. It is also slow — a large fence by brush is a weekend rather than an afternoon.

Rolling is faster on flat surfaces and skips the gaps between pickets, so it usually needs a brush to follow up anyway.

Spraying is fastest by a wide margin and the most common way to get an underwhelming result, because sprayed finish lands on the surface rather than being worked into it. The professional approach is spray-and-back-brush: spray to apply quickly, then immediately brush it in before it sets.

Spraying also demands masking. Overspray carries further than people expect and finds siding, windows, plants and the neighbour's car.

Temperature, timing and the weather window

Most finishes specify an application temperature range, and both ends matter. Too cold and the finish will not cure properly; too hot and it flashes off before it can penetrate, which is why staining in direct midday sun in summer gives a patchy result.

Early morning or late afternoon, out of direct sun, on a day with no rain forecast for at least 24 to 48 hours, is the window. Check the specific product, since required dry times vary considerably.

Working in the shade also means following the sun around the structure rather than starting at one end and working through — stain applied to a hot, sun-baked board behaves differently to the same stain on a shaded one, and the colour difference can be visible afterwards.

Plan the timing around weather too. Most finishes specify a temperature range and need a dry window either side of application — staining a day before rain wastes the material as reliably as staining wood that was never dry to begin with.
