How Many Deck Boards Do I Need?
Counting deck boards depends on the gap between them and on actual board width, not the nominal size. Here is the arithmetic and the two classic errors.
Deck boards are bought by the piece, and the number of pieces turns on two details that are easy to leave out of a quick estimate: the gap between boards, and the fact that a "2×6" is not six inches wide.
Get either wrong and you are short by a row or two, which on a typical deck means another trip and possibly a different batch of lumber.
The calculation
Each row covers its own face width plus one gap:
coverage per row (ft) = (face width in + gap in) ÷ 12
rows = deck width ÷ coverage per row, rounded up
linear feet = rows × deck length
boards = linear feet × (1 + waste) ÷ board length, rounded up
A 16 by 12 foot deck, 5.5-inch boards, 1/4-inch gap:
- Coverage per row: (5.5 + 0.25) ÷ 12 = 0.479 ft
- Rows: 12 ÷ 0.479 = 26
- Linear feet: 26 × 16 = 416
- With 10% waste in 16-ft boards: 29 boards

Error one: nominal size is not actual size
US lumber carries a nominal name that stopped matching reality when boards began being planed:

Run the example with 6 inches instead of 5.5 and you get 24 rows rather than 26. That is two rows short — about 32 linear feet of missing decking, or two extra boards you did not buy.
Always measure the board rather than trusting the label.
Error two: forgetting the gap
The gap is not decorative. It lets water drain and lets the wood move, and its size depends on the moisture content of what you are buying.
Wet pressure-treated lumber arrives heavy and damp and shrinks noticeably as it dries. Fasten it at about 1/8 inch and it opens to roughly a quarter inch by itself.
Kiln-dried or composite will not shrink meaningfully, so leave the full 1/4 inch at installation.
Getting this backwards is common and permanent-looking. Wet lumber laid at a quarter inch dries to gaps you can drop a phone through. Dry lumber laid tight has nowhere to expand and cups in the first humid week.
Note also that the gap changes the board count. At 1/8 inch instead of 1/4 on that same deck, coverage per row rises slightly and you need one row fewer — so the two decisions are linked.
The boards are about half the job
Decking is the visible part and roughly half the cost. What sits underneath is the other half:
- Framing — joists, beams, posts, ledger and hangers. Joist spacing is typically 16 inches on centre, tightening to 12 for diagonal layouts and some composite boards.

- Fasteners. Hidden clip systems consume a surprising quantity and are priced per square foot rather than per box.
- Railing and stairs, often the most expensive element per linear foot and the most heavily regulated.

Layout choices that change the count
Diagonal decking adds five to ten points of waste, because every board is cut at an angle at both ends and the offcuts rarely pair up. It usually requires tighter joist spacing too, so it costs more twice over.
A picture frame border — a perimeter board running the other way — needs its own calculation and extra blocking underneath to fasten to.
Butt joints must land on a joist. If the deck is longer than the boards you can buy, decide where the joints fall before ordering, and stagger them across rows. Lined-up joints read as a mistake; staggered ones read as a decision.
Where you can, match board length to deck length and avoid butt joints entirely. A 16-foot board on a 16-foot deck is one clean run.
Which direction should the boards run?
Deck boards normally run perpendicular to the joists, because that is what they are supported by. That single constraint decides which dimension counts as "length" in the calculation, and getting it backwards flips the whole estimate.
In the worked example the boards run along the 16-foot direction and the rows accumulate across the 12-foot direction. Swap them — boards running the 12-foot way — and you need 34 rows of 12 feet instead of 26 rows of 16, which is 408 linear feet rather than 416. Similar total, different board count and a different number of butt joints, because 12-foot boards are a stocked length and cut waste changes.
There is an aesthetic dimension too. Boards running away from the house make a narrow deck look longer; boards running parallel to it make a long deck look wider. Decide the direction first, then measure, because the framing has to follow it.
Material choice, briefly
Pressure-treated pine is cheapest up front and needs regular cleaning and resealing. Composite costs substantially more per board and essentially nothing to maintain. Hardwoods sit between on cost and want oiling.
The honest comparison is cost per square foot over the life of the deck rather than the shelf price, and it is worth running because the answer is not always the one the store is pushing.
