Why the can’s coverage number is a starting point, not a guarantee

Every stain can lists a coverage figure — commonly 150 to 300 square feet per gallon — but that number is measured under specific conditions that a real, weathered fence rarely matches exactly. Rough-sawn lumber, older wood that’s already weathered and become more porous, and wood with heavy grain texture all absorb more stain per square foot than the smooth, uniform surface a manufacturer tests coverage on. This calculator uses whatever coverage rate you enter, specifically so you can adjust it down for a more porous, absorbent fence rather than trusting a single can label figure that may not match your actual wood.

Both sides or one: a maintenance decision, not just a cost one

Staining only the side you see from your own yard is a common shortcut, but weathering happens on whichever face is exposed to sun and rain — leaving the far side of a fence unstained means it continues weathering unprotected regardless of which side looks nicer from your patio. For a shared property line fence, this is worth an explicit conversation with a neighbor about who maintains which side, since assumptions here are a common source of minor disputes. The waiting period nobody wants to hear about

New pressure-treated lumber is manufactured by pressure-injecting a water-based wood preservative into the wood, which leaves it considerably wetter than dried, seasoned lumber. Staining before that moisture has had time to evaporate out — commonly several weeks to a few months depending on climate and how the wood was stored before installation — prevents the stain from properly penetrating and bonding to the wood fibers, a leading cause of early peeling, blotching and uneven color. The “water bead test” (splashing water on the wood — if it beads up rather than soaking in, it’s not ready) is a simple way to check readiness before committing an otherwise perfectly good gallon of stain to premature failure.

Solid versus semi-transparent: a durability-versus-appearance tradeoff

Solid stains sit more like paint on the wood surface, hiding the grain but lasting longer — commonly 2-3 years before needing a fresh coat. Semi- transparent and clear/toner sealers let the wood grain show through, which many people prefer aesthetically, but they wear faster, often needing reapplication every 1-2 years, especially on fence faces with heavy sun exposure. Neither is objectively better; it’s a genuine tradeoff between how much the fence looks like painted wood versus natural wood, and how often you’re willing to redo the work.

Prep work: the unglamorous step that determines how long it lasts

Stain applied over dirt, mildew, or old flaking finish bonds poorly and fails early regardless of product quality — a cleaner/brightener wash (sometimes combined with light pressure washing, carefully, since too much pressure can gouge softwood) is standard prep before any staining project on an existing fence, not an optional step to skip when in a hurry.
