How Dilution Ratios Actually Work
A 1 to 32 dilution ratio means 33 parts, not 32. Here is the off-by-one that weakens every mix, the ounces per gallon, and why concentrate is so much cheaper.
Every bottle of concentrate carries a dilution ratio on the label, and the notation contains an off-by-one that almost everybody gets wrong at least once. At common ratios the error is small enough that nothing visibly goes wrong. At strong ratios it is large enough to damage a surface or burn a lawn.
1:32 means 33 parts
A ratio of 1:32 means one part concentrate to 32 parts water.
Total parts: 33. Not 32.
To mix a gallon — 128 ounces — you divide by 33, not by 32:
128 ÷ 33 = 3.88 oz concentrate + 124.12 oz water
Dividing by 32 gives 4.0 ounces, a mix about 3 percent stronger than specified. Nobody notices 3 percent.
Where it stops being negligible is at low ratios. At 1:4 — common for heavy-duty degreasers and some garden concentrates — dividing by 4 instead of 5 gives a mix 25 percent stronger than the label says. That is enough to strip a finish, leave a residue that has to be washed off again, or burn what you sprayed it on.
The rule: total parts is always the ratio number plus one.
The ounces worth knowing

Notice why 1:128 is such a popular label ratio: a gallon is 128 ounces, so the instruction becomes "one ounce per gallon". Memorable, and almost impossible to get wrong. Manufacturers choose ratios partly for this reason.

Concentrate to water, never the reverse
Fill the container mostly with water. Add the concentrate. Top up.
For most household cleaners this is about splashing — pouring water into a bottle of concentrate ejects undiluted product back out at you.
For acidic or caustic products it is a genuine safety rule. Adding water to a strong acid or base concentrates the heat of dilution at the point of contact, which can boil and spatter. The old chemistry-lab mnemonic is "do what you oughta, add acid to water".
Wear eye protection while handling the concentrate. It is undiluted by definition — the most hazardous the product will ever be — and it is the step where people are least careful because it takes ten seconds.
Stronger is not better
The intuition that a stronger mix cleans harder, kills more weeds or feeds plants better is wrong nearly across the board.
Cleaning products above their labelled dilution leave surfactant residue. That residue is sticky, it attracts soil, and the surface gets dirty faster than it would have. The floor that dries hazy after mopping was over-concentrated.
Disinfectants have a tested concentration and a required contact time. Doubling the concentration does not substitute for keeping the surface wet for the specified duration — and contact time is the part people actually skip.
Garden and lawn products at excess concentration cause chemical burn. Fertiliser damage and herbicide damage both look like disease, and both are self-inflicted.
Pesticides in the US are legally required to be applied according to their label. Exceeding the labelled rate is not a judgement call, and the label rate is the tested one.
The label wins over any calculator, including ours. Use the arithmetic to hit the label rate accurately, not to improve on it.
Why concentrate is so much cheaper
Here is where dilution meets shopping, and the gap is enormous.
A gallon of concentrate at $28, mixed at 1:32, yields 33 gallons of finished solution — about 85 cents per mixed gallon.
The same product sold ready-to-use in a 32-ounce spray bottle at $4.50 works out to $18 per gallon of finished solution.
That is a twenty-fold difference for chemically identical product. Which is the entire economic case for concentrates, and why the ready-to-use bottle is worth buying exactly once — for the sprayer.
It also means two concentrates cannot be compared on bottle price. A cheaper bottle at a weaker dilution ratio is frequently the more expensive product per mixed gallon, and there is no way to see that without converting. It is the same habit that makes the unit price calculator worth using on anything sold in varying sizes: get both to a common unit first.
Measuring, practically
Use a marked measuring cup, not the cap, unless the cap is graduated. Caps vary, and eyeballing 3.9 ounces out of a gallon jug is how you end up with 6.
Do not eyeball small doses. At 1:128 a gallon takes one ounce, and an extra half-ounce is a 50 percent overdose.
Label the mixed bottle with the product and the date. Unlabelled spray bottles of clear liquid are a real household hazard, and most diluted products have a much shorter effective life than the concentrate did.
Mix what you will use. Many products degrade within days once diluted, so batching a gallon for a job that needs a quart wastes both product and shelf space.
The inputs the ratio does not cover
Water quality matters more than people expect — hard water measurably reduces the effectiveness of some cleaners and many herbicides, and the fix is usually a different product rather than a stronger mix. Temperature affects both mixing and stability.
