The largest package is not automatically the cheapest per unit — "bigger is better value" fails often enough that shelf-tag unit pricing exists as a consumer protection measure. Here the worst option costs 23.7% more per unit than the best.

What this calculator does

Three options, each with a price, a package size and a quantity. It returns the true price per unit for each, ranks them, and shows exactly what premium the losing options carry over the cheapest.

Three at once rather than two, because the real decision at a shelf or a supplier’s price list is rarely binary — it is a small size, a standard size and a bulk size, and the answer is not always the one you expect.

The arithmetic, and why it still gets missed

Total price divided by total units. That is the whole calculation.

It gets missed constantly for a specific reason: the numbers are chosen to make it hard. Compare a 12-ounce bottle at $4.29 with a 40-ounce at $11.99 and a 64-ounce at $18.49. Nothing about those figures divides cleanly, and nothing about them is accidental.

The answers: 35.75, 29.98 and 28.89 cents per ounce. The bulk size wins here — but by only 3.6 percent over the middle size, which is a much smaller advantage than the packaging implies, and which vanishes entirely if you do not use the last quarter of it.

Bigger is not reliably cheaper

The assumption that the largest package has the lowest unit price is wrong often enough that many jurisdictions require unit pricing on shelf tags as a consumer protection measure. That requirement would not exist if the shortcut worked.

Where it breaks:

Promotional pricing on smaller sizes. A sale on the standard size routinely undercuts the everyday price of the bulk size, and the bulk size rarely goes on sale at the same time.

Premium formats. Concentrate, refill pouches, and “value” packaging carry different margins. A refill pouch is usually cheaper per unit; sometimes it is not.

Convenience sizes carrying convenience margins, which is expected — and occasionally a bulk pack carrying an unearned one, which is not.

Multi-buy offers that are not offers. Three for $12 when the single price is $3.79 saves 37 cents in total, which is well within the range of things people accept without checking.

The three-way comparison here is designed for exactly this: the middle option wins more often than anybody expects.

Same unit, always

The calculator deliberately does not convert between units.

That is not laziness. Comparing a package labelled in ounces against one labelled in millilitres, or sheets against square feet, or count against weight, is where confident errors come from — and an automatic conversion hides the assumption rather than surfacing it.

Convert first, deliberately, then compare. If one product is sold by weight and the other by volume, they are not directly comparable at all without knowing the density, and no shelf-tag arithmetic will rescue that.

The unit that actually matters

Price per unit purchased is the easy calculation. Price per unit used is the one that decides whether you saved money.

Cases where they diverge sharply:

Perishables. A bulk pack of produce at 30 percent off, of which you throw away half, cost you 40 percent more per unit eaten than the small pack would have.

Shelf life after opening. Sauces, oils, adhesives, paint, opened bags of mortar. The clock starts at first use, not at purchase.

Storage. A case of anything you have nowhere to put is a real cost, even if it never appears on a receipt.

Concentration differences. Detergent, cleaning products and fertiliser are sold at wildly different concentrations. The correct unit is loads washed, or square feet treated — not ounces. The dilution calculator covers converting concentrate to finished volume, which is what makes those comparable.

Beyond groceries

The same arithmetic, and the same errors, apply anywhere a thing is sold in varying quantities:

  • Printer ink — cost per page, not per cartridge. The spread between a standard and a high-yield cartridge is often enormous.

  • Paint — per square foot of coverage, not per gallon, since coverage varies substantially with the product.

Where the savings actually are

A candid note on scale. Optimising unit prices on individual grocery items saves real money over a year, but the effect is bounded — perhaps a few percent of a grocery budget for a meaningful amount of attention.

The same technique applied to a repeated business purchase is where it compounds. A contractor buying the same fastener, the same sheet good or the same consumable every week is making the identical decision fifty times a year, and a 20 percent unit price difference there is worth vastly more than the same percentage on shampoo.

Which is the practical advice: check unit prices carefully on things you buy repeatedly and in volume, and let the one-off purchases go.

What this leaves out

  • Unit conversion, deliberately, as above.

  • Quality differences. Two products at the same unit price are not the same product.
  • Waste and spoilage, discussed above.

How do I calculate unit price?
Divide the total price by the total number of units in the package. A 40-ounce bottle at $11.99 works out to 30 cents an ounce; a 12-ounce bottle at $4.29 is 35.75 cents. Both must be expressed in the same unit before the comparison means anything, which is the step that gets skipped.
Is the bigger package always cheaper per unit?
No, and it is wrong often enough that shelf-tag unit pricing exists as a consumer protection measure in many places. Only if you will use it all. A larger package you throw away half of costs more per unit actually consumed, which is the number that matters. Perishables, anything with a shelf life once opened, and anything you have nowhere to store are the standard exceptions to buying the biggest size.
