What this calculator does
Household size, flow rates and usage patterns for showers, toilets, faucets and laundry, plus weekly irrigation and your combined water and sewer rate. It returns gallons per day for each fixture with its share of the total, indoor and outdoor split, gallons per person per day, monthly and annual volume, and the cost of each.
The per-fixture breakdown is the useful part, because the fixture people worry about is rarely the one that matters.
The units, and the sewer surprise
Gallons per minute (gpm) for anything that flows — showers, faucets, hoses. Gallons per flush or per use for fixed-volume events — toilets, dishwashers, washing machines.
Utilities bill per thousand gallons or per hundred cubic feet (CCF). One CCF is 748 gallons, which is not a round number and is why bills are hard to read.
Now the part that surprises people: the sewer charge is frequently larger than the water charge, and it is usually billed on your metered water consumption rather than on anything measured leaving the house. The reasoning is straightforward — most water that comes in goes back out.
Which means a gallon saved typically saves twice. It also means the combined rate is the one to enter here, and it is often two or three times the water rate alone. Take it from your own bill.
Some utilities offer a separate irrigation meter, which avoids sewer charges on water that goes on the lawn. Where available and where you irrigate heavily, it frequently pays for itself.
Where the water actually goes
Indoors, the rough ordering across US households is toilets, showers, faucets, laundry, then leaks — with leaks accounting for a surprisingly large share of total consumption nationally.
But across the whole year, in a house with a lawn, outdoor irrigation often exceeds everything indoors combined.
That reframes the usual advice. Shortening showers is the change people reach for first, and on a household with an irrigated lawn it is close to noise. A lawn wanting an inch of water a week over 5,000 square feet needs about 3,100 gallons a week — comfortably more than four people use indoors in the same period.
Which does not mean short showers are pointless. It means that if you are optimising, look at the largest number first, and the calculator shows you which one that is.

The toilet row is the one to look at in an older house. A pre-1994 toilet at 3.5 gallons per flush against a modern 1.28 is nearly a three-fold difference, on the single most-used fixture in the house. Replacing one is usually the highest-return water fixture change available, and modern low-flow toilets no longer have the performance problems the early ones did.
Note also the counter-intuitive dishwasher result: a modern dishwasher uses substantially less water than washing the same dishes by hand under a running tap. Running it full is the efficient choice.
Leaks
Not modelled here, and frequently the largest single item in a real bill.
How to check: turn off every fixture and water-using appliance. Read the meter. Wait an hour or two, using nothing. Read it again. Any movement is a leak.
The usual culprit is a toilet flapper that has gone soft and no longer seals. It makes no noise, there is nothing to see, and it can pass hundreds of gallons a day. The test is a few drops of food colouring in the tank — if colour appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is leaking, and the part costs a few dollars.
Irrigation systems are the other big one: a broken head or a cracked lateral underground can run for months undetected because it happens at 4 a.m. while everyone is asleep.

Outdoor use, briefly
An inch of water over 1,000 square feet is 623 gallons. That constant — 0.623 gallons per square foot per inch — is worth remembering, and it is the same one that turns roof area into gutter flow in the gutter sizing calculator.
Most lawns need roughly an inch a week including rainfall, and most irrigation systems deliver considerably more than that because nobody measures. A rain gauge and a slightly shorter schedule are free.
Watering deeply and infrequently beats daily light watering: it drives roots down, which makes the lawn more drought-tolerant, and it loses less to evaporation. Early morning loses least of all — midday watering can evaporate a substantial share before it reaches the roots.
What this leaves out
- Leaks, discussed above.
- Dishwashers and other appliances not listed as fixtures — add them as a custom fixture using gallons per cycle.
- Tiered rate structures. Many utilities charge escalating rates above consumption thresholds, so the marginal gallon costs more than the average one — which means savings at the top of the tier are worth more than this flat rate suggests.
- Fixed monthly service charges, which do not vary with use.
- Seasonal variation. Enter summer and winter separately for a realistic annual picture.
- Well water, where the cost is electricity for the pump rather than a utility rate — the energy cost calculator covers that side.
- Hot water energy cost, which is often larger than the water cost itself.
