Trim is where metal building quotes diverge most. It is priced per piece, cut on site, and easy to under-order — 600 linear feet here across six different profiles, each ordered separately.
What this calculator does
Panels get priced carefully. Trim gets estimated, and that is why so many metal building jobs stop on the last elevation waiting for another bundle of corner trim.
There is no single trim number — there are six runs, each following a different edge of the building, and each ordered as its own profile. This counts all six and converts the total into sticks at your stock length.
The six runs
eave = length × 2 one along each sidewall
rake = rafter length × 4 two slopes on each gable end
corner = eave height × 4 one vertical run per corner
base = 2 × (width + length) right round at grade
ridge = length along the peak
opening = perimeter of every door and window
On a 40 × 60 building with 14-foot eaves at 4/12 pitch, that is 120 feet of eave, 84 feet of rake, 56 feet of corner, 200 feet of base and 60 feet of ridge — before a single opening is trimmed out.
Note the rake figure uses the sloped rafter length, not half the width. That is the same pitch geometry the roof pitch calculator works out, and using half the span instead is a small, consistent undercount on every gable.
Why trim matters more than it looks
It is tempting to read trim as decoration. It is not — it is the weatherproofing detail of the entire envelope.
- Base trim closes the bottom of the wall panel against the slab, where wind-driven rain and pests otherwise get in.
- Corner trim covers the vertical joint where two elevations meet, the most exposed line on the building.
- Eave and rake trim terminate the panel edges and hold the closures that block the rib openings.
- Ridge cap closes the peak, and it is the single most consequential piece on the roof.
A building sheeted in panels with trim missing or badly lapped is not weathertight. The failures show up at corners and base first, and they show up as water inside the wall rather than as a visible leak.
Ordering practicalities
Stock length. Ten feet is standard, twelve is common, and cut-to-order exists. Fewer joints is better, because joints in trim are exactly where water gets in — matching stick length to your runs is worth a moment.
Profiles are priced differently. This calculator applies one price across all six for simplicity, which understates slightly: ridge cap and corner trim usually cost more per foot than base trim. If your quote itemises them, run the calculator once per profile using its own run figure.
Waste. Ten percent is a reasonable default. Trim is cut on site to fit, and the offcuts rarely serve elsewhere because each run has its own length.
What is not counted here
- Closures, inside and outside, at eave, ridge and base
- Butyl sealant tape at laps and under trim
- Fasteners for the trim itself, which are usually a different length and colour from the panel screws
- Pipe boots and curb flashing for any roof penetration
- Gutters and downspouts, a separate system entirely
Those items are individually small and collectively a real line on the invoice.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is trim so often the part that gets under-ordered?
- Because it is six or seven different profiles counted separately, each with its own run, and none of them follow from the square footage that dominates the rest of the quote. People price panels carefully and treat trim as an afterthought, then discover the corner trim is short on the last elevation.
- Is trim just cosmetic?
- No. Trim closes the gaps where panels meet each other, the ground, and openings — it is what keeps water and wind-driven rain out of the wall cavity, and it holds closures in place. A building with panels but no proper trim is not weathertight, and the failures show up at the corners and base first.
- What stock length does trim come in?
- Ten feet is the common figure, with twelve widely available, and some suppliers cut to order. Longer sticks mean fewer joints, and joints in trim are where water finds its way in, so matching stick length to your building's runs is worth a moment's thought at order time.
- Do I need trim around every opening?
- Yes — jamb and header trim around each door and window is what seals the panel cut back to the frame. That is why this calculator takes an opening perimeter figure. The openings calculator reports it directly, so run that first if you have not already.
- What about closures and sealant?
- Separate, and easy to forget. Inside and outside closures fill the rib profile at eave, ridge and base; butyl sealant tape seals laps and trim joints. Neither is counted here, and a building assembled without them leaks regardless of how much trim was ordered.
