What Is First Hour Rating on a Water Heater?

First hour rating measures the hot water a tank actually delivers in its busiest hour. It predicts cold showers better than tank gallons do.

Water heater shopping starts with a question about gallons and should start somewhere else. The number that actually predicts whether someone gets a cold shower on a Sunday morning is the first hour rating — how much hot water the unit delivers in its single busiest hour, counting both what is stored and how fast it reheats.

A 40-gallon tank with a fast recovery rate can out-deliver a 50-gallon tank with a slow one. Gallons alone does not tell you that.

What the first hour rating actually measures

FHR is printed on the yellow EnergyGuide label. It is a tested figure: start with a full tank at temperature, draw hot water continuously, and measure how many gallons come out above a usable temperature in sixty minutes.

Two things feed it:

  • Storage volume — what is already hot when the hour starts.
  • Recovery rate — how fast the burner or element reheats incoming cold water while the draw continues.

That second half is why FHR and tank size diverge. A gas water heater typically recovers faster than an electric one of identical volume, so the gas unit posts a higher FHR from the same gallons.

Sizing to your household's actual peak hour

The useful target is roughly 12 gallons of hot water per person for the busiest hour of the day, which in most households means morning showers stacked on top of each other.

A family of four lands near 48 gallons of first-hour demand. Match that against FHR on the label rather than against gallons on the badge, and the shortlist looks different from the one you would have built on tank size alone.

Storage tank rules of thumb by household size still hold as a first pass — 40 gallons for one or two people, 50 for three or four, 66 to 80 for five or more — but they assume a conventional usage pattern. A soaking tub, a multi-head shower, or daily back-to-back hot laundry all break that assumption, and the honest fix is sizing up rather than hoping.

Tankless is a different question entirely

A storage tank answers "how much hot water is banked before I run out." A tankless unit never runs out in that sense, because it heats water as it flows. It has a different hard ceiling: how much flow it can heat at once, in gallons per minute.

Add up the fixtures that might run simultaneously during your worst realistic morning. A shower runs about 2.5 GPM, a dishwasher about 1.5, a washing machine about 2.0. Two showers together is 5 GPM before anything else starts.

Then add headroom, because of the mistake below.

The tankless sizing mistake that produces cold showers

Tankless GPM ratings on the box are measured at a generous incoming water temperature — often 50°F or warmer. That describes groundwater in the Southeast reasonably well. It describes groundwater in Minnesota in February not at all.

The colder the incoming water, the more temperature rise the unit has to produce, and the lower its usable flow rate becomes at your actual setpoint. A unit rated 9.5 GPM in ideal conditions might deliver closer to 6 GPM in a northern winter.

Every manufacturer publishes a flow-rate table across a range of inlet temperatures. Size against the coldest month your groundwater sees, not the headline number on the front of the spec sheet. This single detail is behind most "my new tankless ran out with two showers going" complaints.

Standby loss and the case against oversizing

Storage tanks lose heat continuously just sitting there full — standby loss. A tank sized well beyond your real peak pays a small ongoing efficiency tax for capacity you never draw, and takes longer to fully reheat after a large draw like filling a tub.

Right-sizing beats maximizing. The goal is matching the unit to your household's worst realistic hour, using your honest routine rather than an idealized one, and re-running the numbers when the household changes. A tank sized for two people is a predictable source of complaints once a third person moves in.

Fuel type changes recovery more than it changes efficiency

Two 50-gallon tanks, one gas and one electric, are not interchangeable even at identical storage volume.

A gas burner can deliver heat into the tank far faster than a standard resistance element can, so the gas unit posts a substantially higher first hour rating from the same gallons. In practice that means an electric household often needs a physically larger tank than a gas household with identical hot water habits.

Heat pump water heaters complicate this usefully. They move heat rather than generating it, running at a fraction of the energy input of resistance electric, but their recovery rate is slower — so they typically pair a larger tank with high efficiency, and many include a resistance backup element for heavy-draw periods. Check the FHR on the label rather than assuming the efficiency gain comes free.

Recovery rate and the second-shower problem

The complaint that sends people shopping is almost always the same: the second or third shower of the morning runs cold.

That is a recovery rate problem, not necessarily a storage problem. If the tank empties faster than the burner or element can reheat incoming cold water, tank size only buys you a little more time before the same thing happens.

Two fixes work. Increase storage so there is more banked before recovery matters, or increase recovery so the tank refills hot faster. FHR is the single number that captures both, which is precisely why it is the spec worth shopping on.

Staggering demand also works and costs nothing — moving one shower to the evening, or running hot laundry overnight rather than during the morning rush, flattens the peak the water heater has to serve.
