What Is a Board Foot? Lumber Math Explained
A board foot is 144 cubic inches of lumber, measured nominally. Here is the formula, why a 2x4 counts as 2 by 4, and how to compare per-piece pricing.
Walk into a lumberyard and you will be quoted two entirely different ways. A 2×6×12 has a price. Walnut is $9.50 a board foot. Neither quote is comparable to the other until you convert one into the other, and the conversion is the single most useful piece of arithmetic in buying wood.
What a board foot actually is
One board foot is the volume of a board one inch thick, twelve inches wide and one foot long — 144 cubic inches.
The working formula:
board feet = thickness(in) × width(in) × length(ft) ÷ 12
A 2×6 that is twelve feet long: 2 × 6 × 12 ÷ 12 = 12 board feet.
The division by twelve is reconciling units — two dimensions in inches, one in feet. If all three are in inches, divide by 144 instead. Both work; the first is easier to do standing at a lumber pile.
Nominal, not actual — and why that is fine
Here is the part that reliably confuses people the first time.
A 2×4 does not measure 2 by 4 inches. It measures 1½ by 3½, because it was sawn at full dimension while green and then dried and surfaced down. A 2×6 is 1½ by 5½. A 1×8 is ¾ by 7¼.
Board feet nonetheless use the nominal figures. A 2×4 counts as 2 by 4.
Which means board-foot volume overstates the physical wood in dimensional softwood by roughly a third. That sounds like a scandal and is not one: everyone in the trade knows it, prices are set with it in mind, and it has been the convention for over a century. The number is a trading unit, not a measurement of matter.
For rough-sawn hardwood the distinction largely disappears, because rough lumber genuinely is the dimension it is sold at — until you surface it, at which point you have paid for wood that is now shavings on the floor.
Two pricing conventions, one comparison
Dimensional softwood — the 2×4s and 2×10s at a lumberyard — is sold by the piece. It is a commodity milled to fixed sizes in enormous volume, so pricing it as an item is natural.
Hardwood and rough lumber are sold by the board foot, because they come in random widths and lengths straight off the log. There is no standard piece to price, so you pay for volume.
The comparison problem follows immediately: is $14 for a 2×6×12 better or worse than $1.35 a board foot?
That 2×6×12 is 12 board feet. $14 ÷ 12 = $1.17 per board foot — cheaper than the quoted $1.35. You cannot see that without converting, and the board foot calculator does it both directions so the answer is visible rather than derived.
This is the same habit that makes the unit price calculator useful on anything sold in varying quantities: convert to a common unit first, then compare. It is the most reliably profitable ten seconds in any purchase.
Reading hardwood thickness
Hardwood is quoted in quarters of an inch, rough:

Spoken as "four quarter", "eight quarter". You are billed on the rough thickness even when the dealer surfaces it for you, because the material removed in surfacing came off your board.
That is why buying rough and surfacing yourself is cheaper if you own a planer, and why yield matters far more in hardwood than in softwood. A rough board with sapwood, knots and wane might give you 70 to 85 percent usable material before you make a single cut for your project.
Waste, and being honest about it
Ten percent is right for straightforward dimensional work where you cut to length from stock lengths.
Push it higher when:
- Cutting to specific short lengths. Offcuts from a 12-foot board cut into 40-inch pieces are dead loss — three pieces and a stub.
- Working with hardwood, for the yield reasons above.
- Grain and colour matching matters. Furniture work rejects boards for reasons framing never would.
- You are hand-selecting for straightness. Crowned and twisted pieces get culled from your pile, not the yard's.
The weight nobody accounts for
Kiln-dried softwood runs roughly 3 pounds per board foot.
Forty 2×6×12s — 480 board feet — is about 1,600 pounds. That is beyond the payload of most half-ton pickups and well beyond what an unbraked trailer should carry.
Green lumber runs half again heavier. Dense hardwoods like oak, maple and hickory run 4 to 5 pounds per board foot.

What board feet do not tell you
Volume is not the whole purchase. Grade, species, moisture content and treatment all change both price and suitability, and none of them appear in a board-foot figure. A Select Structural 2×10 and a No. 2 2×10 are the same board feet and different spans.
