How Much Rock Do You Need for Xeriscaping?
Xeriscaping rock is ordered by the ton but calculated by volume. Here is the conversion, the depth to use, and what the rest of the project costs.
Converting a lawn to rock and drought-tolerant planting is mostly a design decision and entirely a volume calculation. Xeriscaping goes wrong at the ordering stage more often than the planting stage, because rock is quoted by the ton and calculated by the cubic yard.
Getting between those two units is the whole problem.
The calculation, start to finish
cubic yards = area × (depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27
tons = cubic yards × tons per cubic yard
Decorative rock runs roughly 1.2 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on stone size and type, so a 600-square-foot bed at 3 inches deep needs about 5.6 cubic yards, or somewhere near 7.5 tons.

Depth depends on stone size, not preference
The instinct is to pick a depth and apply it everywhere. Stone size should decide it instead.
Fine gravel and decomposed granite cover well at about 2 inches. Mid-size decorative rock wants 2 to 3. Large river rock and cobble need 3 to 4, simply because a layer thinner than the stones themselves does not hide the fabric underneath — you end up looking at black landscape fabric between rocks, which is the most common visible failure in a finished job.
Going deeper than needed is not a safety margin. It is dead weight you paid to have delivered and then moved by wheelbarrow.
Rock is far heavier than mulch, and it changes the logistics
A cubic yard of mulch weighs 500 to 800 pounds. A cubic yard of decorative rock weighs roughly 2,700 to 3,000 — more than three times as much for identical coverage.
Two practical consequences follow. Delivery trucks and driveways have real weight limits, so a large order sometimes has to be split or staged rather than dropped in one pile. And moving rock by wheelbarrow is materially harder work per cubic yard than moving mulch.
Budget the labour honestly, or budget for the supplier to place it closer to where it is going. The mulch calculator handles the lighter material if part of the design uses bark rather than stone — many xeriscaping plans mix the two, using mulch in planted beds and rock in circulation areas.
Weed barrier goes down first, and it is not permanent
Landscape fabric under rock blocks weeds rooting up from the soil below, which is most of what would otherwise come through.
It does not stop everything forever. Windblown seed and dust accumulate on top of rock over months and years, and weeds eventually root in that surface layer regardless of what sits underneath. That is normal and expected rather than a sign the fabric failed — occasional light surface weeding remains part of the maintenance picture, just dramatically less than an unprotected bed.
Laying rock first and fabric later, which people occasionally attempt as a retrofit, traps weeds beneath the rock rather than blocking them. The order matters.
Plant selection is regional, and generic lists are useless
The "xeri" in xeriscaping comes from the Greek for dry, and the concept means matching plants to your region's natural water availability rather than fighting it with irrigation.
Native and regionally adapted species need far less supplemental water once established. Which species those are varies enormously — drought tolerant in Arizona and drought tolerant in coastal California describe almost entirely different plant palettes.
A local extension office or native plant society is a far better source than any national list. They will also know which species handle your specific soil, which is the variable most online plant guides ignore entirely.
The establishment period nobody plans for
A persistent misconception is that a xeriscaped yard needs no water from day one.
In practice even genuinely drought-tolerant plants need regular watering through their first one to two growing seasons while roots establish deeply enough to find water on their own. Drip irrigation, which delivers water to root zones with minimal evaporation loss, is the standard approach during that window and is usually kept afterwards at much-reduced frequency rather than removed.
Budgeting irrigation as part of the initial project rather than an afterthought is what prevents under-watering new plants into an early death and a replanting bill.
Edging keeps rock where you put it
Rock migrates. Without a defined edge it works its way into lawn, onto paths and down slopes, and the bed's outline blurs within a season or two.
Steel, aluminium and composite edging all work and differ mainly in how they handle curves and frost. Concrete or stone borders cost more and last indefinitely. Plastic roll edging is cheapest and heaves out of the ground in cold climates, which is why it looks acceptable in year one and untidy in year three.
Edge height should sit slightly above the rock surface, not flush with it — flush edging is decorative rather than functional.
Slopes need particular attention. Rock on any meaningful grade will creep downhill with rain and gravity, so steeper areas want larger stone, which moves less readily than pea gravel, plus a genuine retaining edge at the bottom. Weed control after the first year
The honest expectation for a rock bed is low maintenance rather than no maintenance.
Two habits keep it looking intentional. Blow or rake debris off the rock periodically, because accumulated organic matter is the seedbed weeds actually root in — clean rock stays comparatively weed-free far longer than rock full of leaf litter. And treat weeds early, while they are surface-rooted and pull easily, rather than after they have found their way through to soil.
Rock beds also need occasional topping up. Stone settles into the soil beneath and gets displaced by foot traffic and weather, so a bed at 3 inches will read thinner after several years. Budget a partial top-up every five years or so rather than a full replacement.
What xeriscaping actually saves
Turf lawns are typically the highest water-consuming element of a residential landscape. Converting even part of a lawn commonly cuts outdoor water use for that area by half or more.
