Driveway Paving Cost: Asphalt vs Concrete vs Pavers

Driveway paving cost varies three-fold across materials, but base preparation decides lifespan more than the surface material ever does.

Driveway quotes lead with a per-square-foot number for the visible surface, and that number only covers half of what determines whether the driveway lasts. Driveway paving cost splits into the surface material and the base underneath it, and the second one is where projects quietly fail.

Here is how the three common materials actually compare, and what the base question means.

The three materials, honestly compared

Asphalt is typically the cheapest per square foot, commonly $3 to $7 installed. It has some flexibility, which helps it survive freeze-thaw cycles that crack rigid surfaces. It needs periodic sealcoating and has a shorter total lifespan, generally 20 to 25 years.

Concrete runs higher, roughly $6 to $12 installed, and typically lasts longest with the least maintenance — 25 to 30 years or more. It is more prone to cracking in severe freeze-thaw climates without properly placed control joints, and it shows oil staining far more visibly than dark asphalt does.

Pavers cost the most, often $10 to $20 or more, because they are hand-laid unit by unit. They offer the most design flexibility and one genuine practical advantage: individual damaged pavers can be replaced without redoing the whole driveway, which is impossible with a monolithic surface.

Base preparation decides lifespan, not the surface

Underneath any driveway sits a compacted gravel base whose job is distributing vehicle weight and managing drainage so the surface above does not crack, rut or heave.

Skimp on excavation depth, use inadequate base material, or fail to compact it properly, and the surface will fail within a few years regardless of whether it is asphalt, concrete or pavers. The surface gets blamed; the base is the cause.

This is the highest-leverage place not to cut cost, even if it means choosing a cheaper surface material to keep the total the same. A well-based asphalt driveway outlasts a poorly-based concrete one comfortably.

Drainage is the second thing that kills driveways

Water is the mechanism behind almost every driveway failure. It softens the base, it freezes and expands in cracks, and it undermines edges.

A driveway needs a slope — commonly around 1 to 2% — to shed water rather than pond it. Flat driveways hold water; driveways sloping toward the garage deliver it somewhere expensive.

For sites where surface drainage alone will not do it, a French drain along the low edge is the usual answer, and it is far cheaper to install during construction than to retrofit.

Sealcoating: for asphalt only, and not immediately

Sealcoating protects asphalt from UV degradation, oil staining and water penetration, meaningfully extending its life when done on a sensible cycle — commonly every two to three years after the first application.

The timing mistake is doing it too early. Fresh asphalt needs 6 to 12 months to finish curing and off-gas the oils in the mix before its first seal. Sealing before that traps the process and can cause the coating to fail prematurely.

Concrete and pavers have their own maintenance — occasional crack sealing for concrete, joint sand replenishment for pavers — but neither uses asphalt sealcoating.

Estimating driveway paving cost you can actually compare

Because base prep and surface material are priced so differently by different contractors, itemised quotes are the only way to compare meaningfully. Ask each bidder to separate:

  • Excavation depth and disposal
  • Base material type, depth and compaction method
  • Surface material, thickness and installation
  • Edging, if any
  • Drainage provisions

A bid noticeably cheaper than the others is worth a specific question about base depth. That is where corners get cut to hit a lower number, and it is invisible the day the job finishes.

Climate should narrow the choice before price does

The right material is partly a regional question, and regional experience is worth more than a national cost comparison.

Hard freeze-thaw climates favour asphalt's flexibility. Concrete can be made to work with properly spaced control joints and adequate base, but it is less forgiving of ground movement, and a cracked slab is not repairable the way an asphalt surface is.

Hot climates favour concrete. Asphalt softens meaningfully in sustained high heat, which shows up as tyre indentations, scuffing where cars turn, and a surface that tracks into the garage on hot afternoons.

Wet climates favour permeable pavers, which let water pass through joints rather than shedding it to the edges — genuinely useful where drainage is constrained or where local rules limit impervious surface area on a lot.

Look at what has lasted on your street. Twenty-year-old driveways in your specific climate are better evidence than any general guidance.

Repair and replacement, honestly

Every driveway eventually needs work, and the three materials fail differently.

Asphalt cracks and can be crack-sealed cheaply, then eventually resurfaced with a new layer over the old one — a genuinely economical mid-life option that concrete does not offer.

Concrete cracks and is essentially unrepairable cosmetically. Patching is visible forever. When a concrete driveway reaches the end, it usually means demolition and full replacement, including disposal of the old slab.

Pavers are the outlier: individual units lift out and go back, so a damaged area or a settled patch is a genuine repair rather than a patch. That flexibility is a real part of their value, and it partly offsets the higher install price over a long enough horizon.

Sizing the driveway itself

Before pricing anything, settle the dimensions. A single-car driveway commonly runs 10 to 12 feet wide; a double sits around 20 to 24. Length depends on the setback and how many vehicles need to sit on it.

Add turning and parking area honestly — a driveway that technically fits a car but not the act of manoeuvring one is a permanent daily irritation for a modest one-time saving.
