One ton covers about 55 square feet at 3 inches compacted. That coverage figure is the quickest way to sanity-check a paving quote — if the tonnage on the invoice does not match your area divided by it, ask why.

What this calculator does

Area and compacted thickness go in, along with the mix density and the depth of aggregate base underneath. Out comes the tonnage of hot-mix to order, the coverage one ton gives you at that thickness, the base stone in tons and cubic yards, and a total at your quoted rates.

The coverage figure is the one worth writing down. It converts any paving quote into a number you can check in your head.

Why asphalt is sold by the ton

Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard. Gravel is ordered by the ton but calculated by volume. Asphalt is ordered, quoted and invoiced by the ton, and volume barely appears anywhere in the transaction.

The reason is compaction. Hot-mix leaves the plant loose and hot, arrives in an insulated truck, is laid by a paver at a thickness noticeably greater than its final one, and then loses roughly twenty percent of its volume under the roller. Volume is a moving target throughout that process.

Weight is not. A ton at the plant is a ton in the truck is a ton in the ground. So the industry prices by weight and everyone converts at the end.

The conversion needs a density, and 145 pounds per cubic foot is the standard figure for compacted dense-graded hot-mix. Your plant can give you the exact number for the mix you are buying; it will be within a few percent of 145, and the difference matters only on large jobs.

The coverage numbers worth memorising

At 145 lb/cu ft, one ton of asphalt covers:

A 60 by 12 foot driveway is 720 square feet. At 3 inches that is 720 ÷ 55 ≈ 13 tons. If a quote arrives specifying 3 inches and 9 tons of material, the arithmetic does not work and it is worth asking whether the thickness or the tonnage is the one that is wrong.

The base is most of the pavement

Asphalt is a flexible pavement. It does not span anything — it distributes load into the layer below and depends entirely on that layer being stable, drained and compacted.

Which means the failure you see in the asphalt is usually a failure in what is under it:

  • Alligator cracking — an interconnected web of cracks — is fatigue from the base flexing too much under load. It means the base is inadequate or saturated, and no amount of surface treatment fixes it.
  • Potholes start as small cracks that let water into the base, which then loses strength, which then lets the asphalt above it break up.
  • Rutting in wheel paths is either a mix problem or a base problem, and usually the second.

Four to six inches of compacted dense-graded aggregate is a reasonable residential default; eight or more where trucks run, and more again in a hard-freeze climate where frost heave rather than load is the governing case. Compact in lifts. Drain it.

Thickness, and the number of lifts

Two inches compacted is the practical minimum for a surface course. Three is the common residential standard. Four or more anywhere a delivery truck turns, because a turning wheel applies a shear load that a thin surface does not tolerate.

Anything much over three inches is normally placed in two lifts — a binder course and a surface course — rather than one thick one, because compaction becomes unreliable in deep single lifts. That does not change the tonnage, but it changes the schedule and sometimes the price.

Overlays: what they can and cannot do

Paving two inches over an existing driveway is common and often reasonable. It works when the existing surface is structurally sound, drains correctly, and its cracks are minor.

It does not work when the base has failed. Cracks in the old surface reflect through the new one within a season or two, alligatored areas keep alligatoring, and a low spot that held water before will hold it after. An overlay is a wearing surface, not a repair.

Also worth checking: adding two inches raises the driveway two inches, which matters at the garage slab, at the street, and anywhere a door swings over it.

Timing and temperature

Hot-mix has to be compacted while it is hot, which makes paving weather- dependent in a way most trades are not. Cold ambient temperatures pull heat out of the mat before the roller has finished with it, and an under-compacted mat is permanently weaker and more permeable.

Most contractors in northern climates stop paving somewhere in late autumn and start again in spring. A quote for a January driveway in a cold region is worth a second look.

  • Tack coat between lifts or against existing pavement.

  • Sealcoating and striping.
  • Equipment mobilisation, which on small residential jobs is often a substantial share of the total.
  • Mix design. Surface, binder and base courses use different mixes.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of asphalt do I need?
Multiply the area in square feet by the compacted thickness in feet to get cubic feet, multiply by 145 pounds per cubic foot, and divide by 2,000. A 60 by 12 foot driveway at 3 inches is 180 cubic feet, or about 13 tons. Add a few percent for waste and for the thicker edges every real driveway ends up with.
How much does a ton of asphalt cover?
About 82 square feet at 2 inches compacted, 55 at 3 inches, and 41 at 4 inches. That figure is the fastest sanity check on a paving quote — divide your area by it and see whether the tonnage on the invoice is in the right neighbourhood.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Two inches of surface course over a properly compacted base is the minimum for a residential drive, three is the common standard, and four or more is appropriate anywhere trucks turn or park. The base underneath matters at least as much — four to eight inches of compacted aggregate, more in a hard-freeze climate.
Why is asphalt sold by weight instead of volume?
Because it arrives hot and loose and leaves the roller compacted, losing roughly a fifth of its volume in the process. Volume at the plant and volume in place are different numbers, whereas weight is the same in both states. Every asphalt quote you receive will be in tons for exactly this reason.
Can I pave over an existing asphalt driveway?
Often, with a two-inch overlay, provided the existing surface is structurally sound and drains correctly. What an overlay cannot do is fix a failed base — cracks that reflect through within a season, alligator cracking, or areas that hold water all indicate a base problem, and paving over it buys two years at most.
