What this calculator does
Roofing has its own unit — the square, meaning 100 square feet — and its own trap, which is that the roof is always bigger than the house. This calculator converts a ground-level footprint into actual sloped area using the pitch, then into squares, bundles and underlayment rolls.
The pitch multiplier
A pitched roof plane is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose base is the footprint. The multiplier comes straight from Pythagoras:

A 1,600 square foot footprint at 6/12 is 1,789 square feet of actual roof — nearly 200 square feet more than the house below it, or two extra squares of shingles. At 12/12 the same house needs 2,262 square feet.
Ordering off the footprint is the single most common material error in roofing, and it is always an undercount.
Measuring pitch safely
You do not need to get on the roof. From inside the attic, hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter, mark 12 inches along the level, and measure vertically down to the rafter at that mark. That drop is your rise over a 12-inch run: a 6-inch drop is a 6/12 pitch.
Most US houses fall between 4/12 and 8/12. Anything above 8/12 is steep enough that walking it requires proper staging, and above 10/12 it is specialist work.
Squares, bundles and waste
Divide the sloped area by 100 for squares. Architectural shingles come three bundles to the square, so a 20-square roof is 60 bundles.
Waste of 10–15% is standard. Push it higher for a roof with many valleys, hips or dormers, because every one of those is a line of angled cuts. A simple gable roof sits at the bottom of that range; a complex roof with several intersecting planes can justify 20%.
Underlayment is sold by the roll with a coverage figure — commonly around 400 square feet for synthetic — so it is calculated separately from the shingles.
What this leaves out
Materials beyond shingles and underlayment are a substantial part of the job:
- Drip edge along every eave and rake, sold in 10-foot lengths.
- Flashing at every wall intersection, chimney and skylight. Reusing old flashing is a common shortcut and a common leak.
- Ridge vent and ridge cap shingles, priced per linear foot.
- Nails, and note that most codes specify a nail count per shingle, higher in high-wind regions.
- Ice and water shield at eaves and valleys, required by code in most northern states.
- Tear-off and disposal, which is heavy, bulky and usually charged by weight.
Labour typically exceeds materials on a re-roof, sometimes by a wide margin.
Roof work and the rest of the envelope

Getting a comparable quote
Ask every contractor to quote per square, with the tear-off, disposal and flashing itemised. A price per square with everything bundled is impossible to compare against another bundled price with different assumptions inside it.
Ask specifically how many layers are coming off, since that drives disposal cost, and whether the quote assumes any deck replacement — rotten sheathing is the classic mid-job change order.

- What is a roofing square?
- One hundred square feet of roof surface. It is the unit the whole trade quotes in, and architectural shingles are sold three bundles to the square. A quote priced per square is comparing like with like; one priced per bundle is not, unless you check the bundle count.
- Why is the roof bigger than the house footprint?
- Because a pitched roof is the sloped face of a triangle, not the flat base. A 6/12 pitch adds about 12 percent to the area, a 12/12 pitch adds over 41 percent. Ordering shingles off the building footprint is the most common way to come up short on a roofing job.
- How do I find my roof pitch without climbing up?
- From inside the attic, hold a level horizontally against a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, and measure straight down to the rafter at that point. That vertical distance is the rise over a 12-inch run. A 6-inch drop is a 6/12 pitch.
- How many layers of shingles can I put on?
- Most US jurisdictions permit two layers before requiring a full tear-off, and some permit only one. A second layer saves disposal cost but hides deck damage and shortens the life of the new shingles. Check local code, because the inspector will.
- Does this include everything I need?
- No. It covers shingles and underlayment. Drip edge, flashing, ridge vent, ridge caps, nails, tear-off labour and disposal are all separate, and on most re-roofs labour and disposal together exceed the material cost.
