The raise that isn’t actually a raise

Every raise announcement leads with a percentage, and it’s natural to evaluate a raise entirely on that number — 3%, 5%, 8%, bigger is better. That instinct misses the half of the equation that determines whether the raise actually improved your financial position: what happened to prices over the same period. A 4% raise sounds unambiguously good until you learn inflation ran 6% that year, at which point the same raise represents a real decline in what your paycheck can actually buy, even though the number on the pay stub is objectively larger than before.

Nominal versus real, precisely

“Nominal” describes a raw dollar or percentage change with no adjustment for anything — it’s the number in the announcement email. “Real” describes the same change adjusted for inflation, which converts it into a comparison of actual purchasing power rather than currency units. This calculator converts your new salary into “old-year dollars” by dividing out the inflation rate, then compares that adjusted figure against your old salary directly — the result is the real raise, expressed both as a percentage and a dollar amount, and it can legitimately be negative even when the nominal raise was positive.

Why this distinction matters more in some years than others

In a low-inflation environment — inflation running 1-2% annually, which describes much of the 2010s in the U.S. — the gap between nominal and real raises is usually small enough not to matter much for typical raise sizes. In a high-inflation environment, the gap becomes the whole story: a company that held raises to a typical 3% during a year of 7-8% inflation gave every employee a meaningful real pay cut while technically giving everyone a raise, and plenty of people don’t realize this happened until they run the actual numbers or notice their budget getting tighter despite an apparently larger paycheck.

Getting the right inflation figure for your specific raise

The single most common mistake in this calculation is using a mismatched time period — comparing a raise that took effect in June against a full calendar-year inflation figure, for instance, when the correct comparison uses inflation specifically over the months between your old and new salary taking effect. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Consumer Price Index monthly, which lets you calculate the percentage change over any specific window rather than relying on an annual average that may not match your actual raise timing. Getting this window right matters more than it might seem — a mismatched period can flip the sign of your “real raise” result entirely in a year where inflation was accelerating or decelerating quickly.

What this doesn’t capture

This calculator measures purchasing power for a single salary figure against a general inflation index — it doesn’t account for your personal spending mix, which can run meaningfully hotter or cooler than the headline CPI depending on how much of your budget goes to categories that are inflating faster or slower than average (housing and healthcare have both run above headline CPI for extended periods; some tech goods have run below it). What's the difference between a nominal raise and a real raise?
A nominal raise is just the percentage your paycheck number went up — a 4% raise is a 4% nominal raise, full stop. A real raise adjusts that number for inflation over the same period, since a dollar today buys less than a dollar did a year ago — a 4% nominal raise during a year with 6% inflation is actually a real pay cut of roughly 2%, even though the number on your pay stub went up.
Where do I find the right inflation number to use?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) monthly at bls.gov — use the percentage change in CPI between the month your old salary took effect and the month your new salary takes effect, not a full calendar year figure if your raise happened mid-year.
Can a raise be a real pay cut even with a positive percentage?
Yes, and this is the entire point of the distinction — any nominal raise smaller than the inflation rate over the same period represents a real decline in purchasing power, regardless of the fact that the paycheck number is larger than before.
