What this calculator does
Your total driving cost and time (from the road trip cost calculator or your own estimate) go in alongside flight cost per person, travelers, airport parking, ground transport at the destination, flight time and airport overhead time. It returns which option is cheaper in pure dollars, which is faster, and — the more useful comparison — which is cheaper once your own time is given a dollar value.
Two different questions, not one
“Which is cheaper” and “which is better” are different questions, and this calculator deliberately answers both rather than picking one. The pure-cost comparison treats an hour spent driving and an hour spent at the gate as free. The time-adjusted comparison prices them, using whatever hourly value you assign your own time.
Those two comparisons frequently disagree. A short flight that’s expensive in dollars can still win once a long, tiring drive is priced at even a modest hourly rate — and a road trip that’s clearly cheaper in dollars can still be the better financial choice once flying’s added airport overhead time is counted honestly.
Why group size usually favors driving
A flight ticket is a per-seat cost — a family of four pays for four tickets, four sets of the fee structure that comes with each one. A car trip’s dollar cost barely moves whether it’s carrying one person or four; the same tank of gas, the same tolls, often the same hotel room split more ways.
That’s the core reason driving tends to win financially as a group grows, independent of distance. It’s also why the time-adjusted comparison can flip the other way for a larger group: if everyone’s time is genuinely valued at the entered hourly rate, driving’s extra hours get multiplied by every traveler in the car, which can outweigh the ticket-cost savings.
Being honest about the value of your time
The hourly figure you enter does most of the work in the time-adjusted result, and it’s worth choosing it carefully rather than defaulting to a full wage. Vacation time and a workday aren’t interchangeable — an hour spent driving on a Saturday you’d otherwise spend relaxing at home isn’t worth the same as an hour taken from billable work. A lower, more honest figure for leisure travel usually produces a more useful comparison than plugging in a full salary-derived rate.

Frequently asked questions
- Is flying or driving cheaper for a family trip?
- Usually driving, once everyone's flight cost, parking and ground transport at the destination are added up — flying's cost multiplies per traveler while driving's cost mostly doesn't. But driving's time cost multiplies per traveler too if everyone's time genuinely has value, which can flip the comparison back the other way on a long drive.
- How do I put a dollar value on my own time?
- A common shortcut is your after-tax hourly wage, though that overstates it for time you wouldn't otherwise have worked — a Saturday afternoon in the car isn't the same as an hour taken from a paying job. Many people land somewhere between a quarter and half of their hourly wage as a more honest personal figure.
- Why does group size change which option wins?
- Flying's dollar cost scales almost exactly with headcount — each additional traveler is a full extra ticket. Driving's dollar cost barely changes with an extra passenger. That asymmetry is why driving tends to pull ahead financially as the group grows, even before time is considered.
- What does this calculator not account for?
- Airport parking and ground transport are estimated as flat inputs rather than looked up, vehicle wear beyond fuel isn't separately broken out, and neither option accounts for the qualitative value of arriving rested versus arriving after a long drive — a real factor this model can't price.
