Why “effective hourly return” is the number to focus on

A flat dollar savings figure doesn’t tell you whether the underlying effort was worthwhile, because it ignores how much time it took to get there. Effective hourly return — savings divided by hours spent — puts deal-hunting on the same footing as any other way you might spend or earn an hour, which is the fairer comparison than looking at either number in isolation.
