Fabricators quote from slab yield, not from your net square footage. Stone slabs come in fixed sizes and a run that will not nest inside one consumes a second slab whether you use it or not — which is why 15 percent waste is a floor rather than a cushion on natural stone.

What this calculator does

Counter runs, depth, island, backsplash, cutouts and exposed edge go in. Out comes the square footage of each element, the total with waste, and a cost broken into the three lines a fabricator actually quotes: material by the square foot, edge profile by the linear foot, and cutouts by the piece.

That three-part structure is the reason countertop quotes rarely match what people calculated at home.

Measuring: runs, island, splash

Counter runs. Measure along the wall, corner to corner, and add every straight section. Corners get counted once in each direction — the actual material in the corner is real, and trying to subtract the overlap produces an under-measurement that no fabricator will honour.

Depth is 25.5 inches in a standard kitchen: 24-inch base cabinets plus a 1.5-inch overhang past the door faces. Bathrooms run 22 inches. Measure yours rather than assuming, particularly in older houses where cabinet depth wanders.

The island is its own rectangle, and it is usually deeper than it looks — 40 inches is common, more if there is seating on one side.

The backsplash counts only if it is the same slab material. A 4-inch stone splash on 16 feet of run is 5.3 square feet of slab. Tile is a separate trade and belongs in the tile calculator.

Why the quote is higher than your number

This is the part worth understanding before you sit down with a fabricator.

Slab yield, not net area. Stone arrives as slabs of fixed size — commonly around 55 by 120 inches for granite and quartz, though it varies by material and supplier. Your kitchen has to be nested inside those slabs, with grain direction respected, seams placed sensibly, and enough margin at edges to cut cleanly. A layout that needs 48 square feet but will not fit in one slab consumes two, and you pay for two.

This is why the 15 percent waste allowance is a floor rather than padding. On an awkward layout it can be far higher, and it is entirely a function of geometry rather than carelessness.

Edge profile is labour. The exposed front edge is machined and polished after the top is cut — an eased edge is quick, an ogee or a mitred waterfall is not. It is priced per linear foot because that is what it costs, and thirty feet of exposed edge on a mid-range profile is a genuine line item.

Note that only exposed edge gets a profile. The back edge against a wall does not, which is why the edge footage input is separate from the counter run.

Cutouts are priced individually. A sink cutout, a cooktop, a faucet bank — each is a separate operation with its own setup, and undermount sinks cost more than drop-ins because the exposed cut edge has to be polished.

Material, briefly and practically

Laminate is the cheapest by a wide margin, and modern laminate looks far better than its reputation. It is not heat resistant and it cannot be repaired.

Butcher block is warm, inexpensive, and repairable indefinitely by sanding. It needs oiling and it does not like standing water, which makes the area around a sink its weak point.

Granite is a natural stone, so every slab is different and you should go see the actual slab you are buying rather than a sample. It needs periodic sealing.

Quartz is engineered — ground stone in resin — so it is consistent slab to slab, non-porous, and never needs sealing. It is not heat-proof; the resin scorches, and that is not repairable.

Solid surface can be seamed invisibly and repaired by sanding, which makes it the practical choice for long unbroken runs.

Seams, and having the conversation early

Every kitchen longer than a slab has seams. Where they fall is a design decision, and it is one the fabricator will make unilaterally if you do not raise it.

Good seam locations: at a sink, where the cutout interrupts the run anyway; at an inside corner; anywhere a visual break is already happening. Bad seam locations: the middle of the largest visible expanse, or across a cooktop opening where the narrow strip in front is fragile.

Ask to see the layout drawing before the slab is cut. Fabricators expect the question from anyone who has done this before.

Overhangs and support

An inch and a half past the cabinet face is standard and self-supporting.

Past about ten inches — a breakfast bar, a seating overhang — the top needs brackets or corbels. Stone is enormously strong in compression and mediocre in tension, which means an over-cantilevered slab does not sag as a warning. It snaps, usually when someone leans on it, and usually not gradually.

Steel brackets set into the cabinet top are the standard solution and are invisible once installed.

What this leaves out

  • Templating. The fabricator measures with a laser or a physical template after the cabinets are set, and that measurement is the one that counts.
  • Tear-out and disposal of the existing top.
  • Plumbing disconnect and reconnect, and the electrician for a cooktop.
  • Delivery and installation, which for stone requires several people.
  • Support brackets for overhangs.
  • Sink, faucet and cooktop themselves.
  • Sealing, on materials that need it.

How do I measure countertop square footage?
Measure each straight run along the wall, corner to corner, and multiply by the depth — 25.5 inches over standard 24-inch base cabinets with the usual overhang. Add the island separately, and add the backsplash if it is the same slab material. Divide by 144 if you are working in inches, or use feet times inches over twelve.
Why does the fabricator's quote exceed my square footage?
Because stone is quoted from slab yield, not from your net area. Slabs come in fixed sizes, and a layout that will not nest inside one slab consumes a second whether you use all of it or not. Add the separate charges for edge profile per linear foot and for each cutout, and a 45 square foot kitchen routinely prices as 55 or more.
How much waste should I allow for countertops?
Fifteen percent is a floor for natural stone, not a cushion — seams have to fall in sensible places, veining has to align across them, and offcuts from a sink cutout are rarely reusable. Laminate and solid surface waste less. Quartz sits in between, since it has no veining to match but the same fixed slab sizes.
