What Is Tongue Weight and Why It Matters
Tongue weight is the number that decides whether a trailer tracks straight or starts to sway. Here is the 10 to 15 percent rule and how to load for it.
Of all the numbers involved in towing, tongue weight is the one people check last and the one that decides whether the trip is uneventful. Every other figure — trailer rating, tow capacity, hitch rating — is a ceiling you stay under. Tongue weight is different: it has a floor as well as a ceiling, and going under the floor is what causes crashes.
What it is
Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer coupler puts on the hitch ball. It is not a fixed property of the trailer — it depends entirely on where the load sits relative to the trailer's axle.
Load placed ahead of the axle pushes the tongue down. Load placed behind it levers the tongue up. Move the same cargo two feet forward and the tongue weight changes substantially without a single pound being added or removed.
The target for a conventional bumper-pull trailer is 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight. A 6,000-pound loaded trailer wants roughly 600 to 900 pounds on the ball.
Too little is the dangerous direction
Here is the physics worth understanding, because it explains why the floor exists.
With insufficient tongue weight — too much load behind the axle — a trailer becomes prone to sway, and sway is not a nuisance. It is a self-amplifying oscillation.
A small yaw of the trailer pushes the back of the tow vehicle sideways. That steers the vehicle slightly. The vehicle's response pushes the trailer harder in the opposite direction. The trailer swings further, pushes back harder still, and each cycle carries more energy than the last.
The whole loop becomes more energetic with speed. Below a threshold it damps out and you feel nothing. Above it, it diverges — and a driver whose instinct is to correct with the steering wheel feeds the oscillation rather than stopping it.
The recovery technique is counter-intuitive and worth knowing before you need it: ease off the throttle, keep the wheel straight, and apply the trailer brakes alone if you have a controller. Braking with the tow vehicle can make it worse.
Too much has its own costs
Excess tongue weight is safer than too little, but it is not fine.
It overloads the hitch, compresses the tow vehicle's rear suspension, and — the part that matters — lifts weight off the front axle. That is where your steering and most of your braking live. A rig squatting hard at the rear has light, vague steering at exactly the moment it needs grip most.
If the tow vehicle's headlights are pointing at the treetops, you are there.
How to load for it
The rule that produces roughly correct tongue weight without measuring anything:
About 60 percent of the load ahead of the axle, 40 percent behind.
Then the details that matter:
- Heaviest items low and over or just ahead of the axle. A low centre of gravity resists both sway and rollover.
- Balance side to side. Uneven lateral loading overloads one tyre and makes the trailer track crooked.
- Strap everything down. Load that shifts at speed changes your tongue weight mid-corner, which is the worst possible moment for it to change.
- Check tyre pressures, trailer and tow vehicle. Trailer tyres run at high pressures, fail dramatically when underinflated, and age out on time rather than on tread depth — a five-year-old tyre with full tread is still a five-year-old tyre.
To measure rather than estimate: a bathroom scale under the jack works for light trailers, a dedicated tongue weight scale for heavier ones, or weigh the whole rig at a truck scale with and without the tongue resting on the ball.
Tongue weight is not the only limit
It is one of four, and satisfying three of them is the same as satisfying none.
Trailer payload capacity — the trailer's GVWR minus its empty weight, both on the VIN plate. This is set by its axles, tyres and frame.
Loaded trailer weight against tow capacity — from your owner's manual, for your exact engine, axle ratio and drivetrain. Not the brochure number, which describes the single best configuration.
Tongue weight against the hitch rating — often far lower than people expect. A hitch rated for 5,000 pounds of towing is frequently rated for only 500 pounds on the ball.
Tongue weight as a percentage — the stability requirement described above.
The trailer load calculator checks all four at once and reports which one binds first, because it varies: small utility trailers usually run out of their own payload, large ones hit the tow vehicle, and a lot of half-ton pickups hit the hitch long before the advertised tow rating.
The limit almost everyone forgets

Tongue weight sits on the tow vehicle and consumes its payload. So do passengers, so does anything in the bed, and so does a weight distribution hitch. A half-ton pickup advertised with an impressive tow rating frequently runs out of payload with a family aboard and 800 pounds on the ball — well before the tow rating comes into play.
Cargo weighs more than you think
Underestimating the load is how people end up outside all of this without realising. Some anchors:
- Lumber — about 3 lb per board foot kiln-dried. The board foot calculator converts a lumber list into a weight, and the answers are routinely over a ton.
- Aggregate — crushed stone runs about 2,800 lb per cubic yard, so a single small-looking pile is close to the payload limit of many utility trailers. The cubic yards to tons converter does that conversion.
- Water — 8.34 lb per gallon. A 100-gallon tank is 834 lb before the tank.
- Firewood — a cord of seasoned hardwood runs 2,500 to 4,000 lb.
For towing safety guidance and the ratings themselves, take every figure from the door jamb sticker and the owner's manual rather than from a specification sheet — the ratings are configuration-specific, and the vehicle in your driveway is the one that counts.
