What Generator Fuel Costs per Hour
Generator fuel cost depends on load, not on rated capacity. Here is how to estimate the burn rate, size the runtime, and store fuel for an outage safely.
Generator fuel consumption is usually quoted at full load, and almost nobody runs a generator at full load. The result is that published figures overstate what an outage actually costs and understate how long a given quantity of fuel will last.
Getting the estimate right matters for two decisions: how much fuel to store, and whether running the generator for a given purpose is worth it at all.
Burn rate follows load, not rating
A generator's consumption depends on the electrical load it is carrying, not on its nameplate capacity.
Run a large generator at a quarter of its rating and it burns considerably less than at full output — though not proportionally less, because there is a fixed component to keeping the engine turning. That fixed component is why a heavily oversized generator running a small load is inefficient: you are burning fuel to spin an engine most of whose capacity is idle.
The practical consequence is that the useful figure is consumption at your actual load, not the specification sheet number. Most manufacturers publish figures at half and full load, and interpolating between them is close enough.

Estimating the load you actually need
The sizing question and the fuel question are the same question, and both depend on distinguishing two numbers.
Running watts is the steady draw of a device. Starting watts is the surge when a motor spins up, which can be several times higher for a few seconds. For a typical outage, the essential list is short: refrigerator and freezer, some lighting, heating system controls and blower, a sump pump if you have one, and device charging. That total is usually far below what people assume, which is why oversized generators are common and why they burn more fuel than necessary.

Generator fuel type changes cost and storage
Petrol is the most common for portable units. It is available and cheap per unit, but it degrades in storage — usually within months without stabiliser — and it is the most dangerous to store in quantity. It also becomes unobtainable during exactly the widespread outages you bought the generator for, since pumps need power.
Propane stores indefinitely without degrading, which is its decisive advantage. It contains less energy per unit volume, so consumption is higher, but tanks can sit for years and be ready. The propane tank sizing guide covers capacity.
Natural gas, for a permanently installed standby unit, removes storage entirely by running off the utility supply. That is the most convenient arrangement and depends on the gas supply staying up.
Diesel stores better than petrol and is efficient, more common on larger units.
Dual fuel units run on either petrol or propane, which is a genuinely useful hedge — propane for long storage, petrol when it is available.
Sizing the fuel supply, not just the generator
The question people get wrong is how long an outage to prepare for.
Multiply the hourly burn rate at your realistic load by the number of hours you want to cover. A generator running continuously through a multi-day outage consumes a quantity of petrol that is genuinely difficult to store safely — which is the main argument for propane for anyone planning beyond a day or so.
Then consider that you probably will not run it continuously. Cycling — several hours on, several off — keeps a refrigerator cold and a house habitable while roughly halving consumption. Planning around cycling changes the storage requirement substantially.
Store fuel outside living space, in approved containers, away from ignition sources, and rotate petrol through normal use rather than letting it sit past its life.
The safety points that are not optional
Two hazards cause the deaths associated with generators, and both are entirely preventable.
Carbon monoxide. Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows and vents — including an open garage, which is not adequate ventilation. Distance from the building is the rule, and a carbon monoxide alarm indoors is essential rather than advisable.
Backfeeding. Connecting a generator to house wiring without a transfer switch energises the utility lines outside and can kill line workers, as well as destroying the generator when power returns. A transfer switch or an interlock, installed properly, is the only safe way to power circuits rather than running extension leads to individual appliances.
Also: let it cool before refuelling, keep it dry, and run it periodically under load so it starts when needed. A generator that has sat untouched for two years frequently will not start, which is the most common failure of all.
Whether it is worth it
For most households a portable unit sized for essentials is the sensible option — cheaper, sufficient for the common case, and enough to protect a freezer and keep heating controls running.
A permanently installed standby unit makes sense with frequent or long outages, medical equipment, a sump pump in a flood-prone basement, or work that cannot stop. It costs considerably more, including installation and periodic servicing.
Against either, compare the alternative: what does an outage actually cost you? Spoiled food, a hotel night, lost work.
