A roof underlayment estimate starts with sloped roof area, then adjusts for the actual product layout. Gross roll area is not usable coverage when side laps, end laps, valleys, eaves and interruptions consume material. Start the roof underlayment estimate with scope

Divide the roof into planes and measure each sloped surface. Identify valleys, hips, ridges, eaves, rakes, walls and penetrations from the roof plan. Record the specified underlayment product, roll dimensions, orientation and required laps. Map ice-barrier zones and ridge-vent runs separately because their widths, exclusions and code or manufacturer requirements are not the same as general underlayment.

Write the drawing date, revision and measurement convention at the top of the takeoff. Label field measurements separately from plan dimensions, and record every assumption that still needs confirmation. A clean base quantity should answer only what the geometry or connection count requires. Waste, packaging, freight, tax, labor and contingency belong on later, named lines so one change does not force the entire estimate to be rebuilt.

Build a measurement sheet

  • Use sloped area rather than horizontal footprint unless the calculator converts pitch explicitly.
  • Calculate usable roll coverage from installed course width and allowed run after laps.
  • Separate short planes and complex areas when remnants cannot be reused.
  • Measure ice-barrier width and length from the approved climate-specific detail.
  • Deduct ridge-vent exclusions such as hips, end clearances and blocked ridge sections.

Keep units visible beside every value. Convert inches to feet once, convert cubic feet to cubic yards once, and avoid rounding until the result reaches a real purchasing unit. When a project contains several compatible areas or runs, total their net quantities before rounding. When products, stock lengths, placement dates or details differ, keep them separate even if combining them would make the worksheet shorter.

Worked roof underlayment estimate example

If a roof has 2,400 square feet of sloped area and the selected roll provides 900 square feet of usable installed coverage, the clean division is 2.67 rolls, which rounds to three before any project-specific waste. Using a 1,000-square-foot gross label would understate the need. Ice barrier at eaves and valleys is calculated separately by its installed width and length; ridge vent is a linear-foot order with its own end conditions.

Run a second case for the input with the greatest uncertainty. Change that one item—not every dimension and allowance at once. The difference between the base and cautious cases shows what is worth confirming with the supplier, contractor or design team. It is more useful than presenting one exact-looking number whose assumptions are invisible.

Follow the calculator formula

Match every term to a measurement or stated purchasing assumption. Inputs that select capacity, spacing, product type or installation method must come from approved documents. The formula can extend those decisions into a count, area, volume, weight or cost; it cannot make the design decisions itself.

Check the result two ways

Sum roof-plane areas and compare them with an independent roof-area estimate. Lay roll courses across the widest representative plane to verify usable width and seam count. Compare ice-barrier linear footage with eaves and valleys, and compare ridge-vent footage with actual open ridge rather than total ridge length.

Also inspect package and stock breakpoints. Run the result just below and above the current input to see whether a small measurement change triggers another piece, roll, box, truck or stock length. Record both net and order quantities. That makes it clear whether a difference comes from geometry, allowance or unavoidable purchasing increments.

Turn the result into an order

Confirm deck condition, dry-in sequence, product compatibility, fastening, temperature limits and exposure time with the roofing documents and manufacturers. Plan material staging so rolls are protected and do not overload or obstruct the roof. Coordinate penetrations and flashings before covering transitions that require inspection.

Ask for a dated written quote using the same unit as the calculator result. Record sales tax, freight, unloading, equipment, minimum charges and return rules separately. If a quoted unit differs—pounds instead of pieces, tons instead of cubic yards, or gross coverage instead of usable coverage—write the conversion next to the line so another person can reproduce it.

Waste should cover normal cutting, laps, handling loss or placement variation supported by the work. Contingency covers unresolved scope and belongs in the budget, not inside material quantity. Keeping the two separate helps crews, owners and suppliers understand why the order changed.
