Use concrete truck load planning to turn verified pour volume into practical loads while accounting for capacity, sequence, access, pace, and delays.

Concrete truck load planning begins after the pour volume and mixture requirements are established. Dividing cubic yards by nominal truck capacity gives a starting count, but dispatch spacing, legal load limits, access, placement rate and separate placements determine whether that count works in practice. Start the concrete truck load planning with scope

Organize the quantity by pour date, placement area and approved mixture. Keep geometric volume, documented placement allowance and dispatch rounding separate. Ask the producer for available load sizes rather than assuming every truck carries the same nominal quantity. Identify pump or chute placement rate, site maneuvering limits, washout location and the party authorized to adjust the final load.

Write the drawing date, revision and measurement convention at the top of the takeoff. Label field measurements separately from plan dimensions, and record every assumption that still needs confirmation. A clean base quantity should answer only what the geometry or connection count requires. Waste, packaging, freight, tax, labor and contingency belong on later, named lines so one change does not force the entire estimate to be rebuilt.

Build a measurement sheet

Keep units visible beside every value. Convert inches to feet once, convert cubic feet to cubic yards once, and avoid rounding until the result reaches a real purchasing unit. When a project contains several compatible areas or runs, total their net quantities before rounding. When products, stock lengths, placement dates or details differ, keep them separate even if combining them would make the worksheet shorter.

Worked concrete truck load planning example

A verified order of 42 cubic yards with 9-yard available loads suggests four full loads and a 6-yard balancing load. It does not automatically suggest five 9-yard orders. If the producer can carry only 8 yards because of legal or route limits, the pattern changes. If the placement is split into two days, each day needs its own balance and may trigger separate short-load charges.

Run a second case for the input with the greatest uncertainty. Change that one item—not every dimension and allowance at once. The difference between the base and cautious cases shows what is worth confirming with the supplier, contractor or design team. It is more useful than presenting one exact-looking number whose assumptions are invisible.

Check the result two ways

Multiply planned load quantities and confirm they sum to the released order. Divide the total quantity by the expected placement rate to estimate active placement time, then compare that with truck spacing and travel conditions. Run one slower-rate scenario to see where waiting time or a cold-joint concern needs operational review.

Also inspect package and stock breakpoints. Run the result just below and above the current input to see whether a small measurement change triggers another piece, roll, box, truck or stock length. Record both net and order quantities. That makes it clear whether a difference comes from geometry, allowance or unavoidable purchasing increments.

Turn the result into an order

Confirm order information directly with the ready-mix producer, including project location, mixture designation, quantity, slump or other specified properties, start time, spacing and unloading method. The responsible team—not the calculator—must address testing, weather, rejected loads, allowable discharge time and placement interruptions.

Ask for a dated written quote using the same unit as the calculator result. Record sales tax, freight, unloading, equipment, minimum charges and return rules separately. If a quoted unit differs—pounds instead of pieces, tons instead of cubic yards, or gross coverage instead of usable coverage—write the conversion next to the line so another person can reproduce it.
