Concrete Slab Estimate and Ordering Checklist
Build a concrete slab estimate with consistent dimensions, thickened areas, waste, truck capacity, placement sequence, and a complete ready-mix order.
A concrete slab estimate should separate geometric volume from the ready-mix order. The first answers how much concrete fits the formed shape; the second accounts for thickened edges, depressions, blockouts, placement loss, truck constraints and the approved mixture requirements. Start the concrete slab estimate with scope
Divide the slab into areas with one thickness. Add thickened edges, grade beams, pits and equipment pads as separate solids, and subtract blockouts only when they are real exclusions. Confirm all dimensions against the latest plan and field forms. Mixture class, strength, exposure requirements, aggregate, slump, air content, fibers and admixtures come from the approved specification or responsible professional, not from a volume calculator.
Write the drawing date, revision and measurement convention at the top of the takeoff. Label field measurements separately from plan dimensions, and record every assumption that still needs confirmation. A clean base quantity should answer only what the geometry or connection count requires. Waste, packaging, freight, tax, labor and contingency belong on later, named lines so one change does not force the entire estimate to be rebuilt.
Build a measurement sheet
- Measure formed length and width and use actual slab thickness for each region.
- Calculate thickened edges and integral beams separately to avoid hiding depth changes.
- List penetrations and blockouts only when their displaced volume is material and confirmed.
- Keep geometric volume, placement allowance and truck rounding as separate values.

Keep units visible beside every value. Convert inches to feet once, convert cubic feet to cubic yards once, and avoid rounding until the result reaches a real purchasing unit. When a project contains several compatible areas or runs, total their net quantities before rounding. When products, stock lengths, placement dates or details differ, keep them separate even if combining them would make the worksheet shorter.
Worked concrete slab estimate example
A 30-by-40-foot slab at 4 inches thick contains about 14.81 cubic yards before other shapes. If a documented 5 percent placement allowance is applied, the planning quantity becomes about 15.56 cubic yards. A thickened perimeter or equipment pad must be added from its own dimensions. Truck planning then depends on the producer's available load size and the placement sequence, so the final dispatch plan may not equal one simple rounding of total project volume.
Run a second case for the input with the greatest uncertainty. Change that one item—not every dimension and allowance at once. The difference between the base and cautious cases shows what is worth confirming with the supplier, contractor or design team. It is more useful than presenting one exact-looking number whose assumptions are invisible.
Follow the calculator formula

Match every term to a measurement or stated purchasing assumption. Inputs that select capacity, spacing, product type or installation method must come from approved documents. The formula can extend those decisions into a count, area, volume, weight or cost; it cannot make the design decisions itself.
Check the result two ways
Recalculate the main slab as square feet times thickness in feet, then divide cubic feet by 27. Compare cubic yards per 1,000 square feet with the stated thickness; at 4 inches, the base slab is about 12.35 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet. A different ratio should be explained by thickness changes or added shapes.
Also inspect package and stock breakpoints. Run the result just below and above the current input to see whether a small measurement change triggers another piece, roll, box, truck or stock length. Record both net and order quantities. That makes it clear whether a difference comes from geometry, allowance or unavoidable purchasing increments.
Turn the result into an order
Provide the producer with the project address, placement time, total quantity, placement rate, access limits and approved mixture requirements. Confirm who can adjust dispatch if field yield differs. Short-load charges, waiting time, washout, pump capacity, testing and rejected material are logistics and cost items, not extra geometric volume.
Ask for a dated written quote using the same unit as the calculator result. Record sales tax, freight, unloading, equipment, minimum charges and return rules separately. If a quoted unit differs—pounds instead of pieces, tons instead of cubic yards, or gross coverage instead of usable coverage—write the conversion next to the line so another person can reproduce it.
