Create a cold-formed steel framing takeoff for floor joists and roof rafters using layout lines, member marks, stock lengths, bridging, and waste.
Floor joists and roof rafters are counted from layout geometry, but they are purchased from member schedules. The takeoff must preserve both facts: where every member occurs and exactly which designation and length the documents assign to it. Start with one framing plan at a time. Mark the framing direction, supported width, on-center spacing and every boundary member. Divide the plan where spacing, designation, span or elevation changes. Count doubled members, headers, trimmers, blocking and bridging from their details rather than adding a generic factor. Roof areas should be separated by plane because slope length and edge conditions can differ even when the horizontal footprint looks simple.
Write the drawing date, revision and measurement convention at the top of the takeoff. Label field measurements separately from plan dimensions, and record every assumption that still needs confirmation. Keep units visible beside every value. Convert inches to feet once, convert cubic feet to cubic yards once, and avoid rounding until the result reaches a real purchasing unit. When a project contains several compatible areas or runs, total their net quantities before rounding. When products, stock lengths, placement dates or details differ, keep them separate even if combining them would make the worksheet shorter.
Worked cold-formed steel framing takeoff example
A 30-foot-wide floor laid out at 16 inches on center has 23 spaces and therefore 24 field-member positions when both edges are included. If the plan adds two doubled trimmer lines around an opening, record those extras separately rather than changing the spacing calculation. For a roof, use the approved sloped member length; a plan-view run is not the same as rafter length. Repeat the calculation for every region with a different span or spacing.
Run a second case for the input with the greatest uncertainty. Change that one item—not every dimension and allowance at once. The difference between the base and cautious cases shows what is worth confirming with the supplier, contractor or design team. Check the result two ways
Draw a tick mark at every layout position along one control line. The physical count should match the calculated count. Then reconcile total member footage by multiplying quantity by scheduled length for each designation. A large difference between this footage and the supplier list is a prompt to inspect openings, edges, doubled lines and stock-length substitutions.
Also inspect package and stock breakpoints. Run the result just below and above the current input to see whether a small measurement change triggers another piece, roll, box, truck or stock length. Record both net and order quantities. That makes it clear whether a difference comes from geometry, allowance or unavoidable purchasing increments.
Turn the result into an order
A supplier-ready list needs mark, designation, length and quantity—not simply total pounds or total pieces. Coordinate bearing clips, web stiffeners, bridging and opening reinforcement with the same member marks. Confirm shipping and access limits for long members and protect delivered material as required by the manufacturer.
Ask for a dated written quote using the same unit as the calculator result. Record sales tax, freight, unloading, equipment, minimum charges and return rules separately. If a quoted unit differs—pounds instead of pieces, tons instead of cubic yards, or gross coverage instead of usable coverage—write the conversion next to the line so another person can reproduce it.
