Artificial Turf Cost, Broken Down Honestly

Artificial turf cost is turf plus infill plus seaming plus base prep. Pricing it as one per-square-foot number understates it substantially.

Pricing a lawn conversion by multiplying square footage against a per-square-foot turf price consistently undershoots reality, because artificial turf cost has four components and only one of them is the turf.

The other three — infill, seaming, and base preparation — are where estimates go wrong, and base prep in particular is where projects go wrong.

The four parts of artificial turf cost

Turf material commonly runs $2 to $6 per square foot depending on pile height, face weight and backing quality.

Infill is sand or rubber granules brushed down into the blades, priced per bag and applied at a rate per square foot.

Seam tape and adhesive are needed wherever two rolls meet, which depends on roll width against your area's width.

Base preparation — excavation, base rock, compaction, weed barrier — is frequently as expensive as the turf itself and varies enormously with site conditions.

Why infill is not optional

Infill is the part nobody sees in photos and the first thing people cut to save money. It is also the single biggest factor in whether turf still looks good in year three.

Without adequate infill weight, the backing has nothing holding it flat against foot traffic, seams and thermal expansion. It ripples, shifts and develops visible wrinkles.

The blades rely on infill for support too. Turf without it progressively mats down under any regular traffic, developing a flattened path exactly where people actually walk — which is, inconveniently, exactly where you look.

Sand is the standard baseline. Rubber infill adds cushioning and is common under playground and sport-court turf, at higher cost per bag.

Seams and which direction to lay the rolls

Turf ships in fixed widths — 12 or 15 feet is standard for residential product. Any area wider than one roll needs a seam.

The calculator works out how many roll-widths fit across your area and prices tape accordingly. What the arithmetic will not tell you is the decision that actually matters: which direction to run the rolls.

Seams running parallel to your main viewing angle — along the length of a yard seen from a patio — are far less noticeable than seams running across it, using the identical amount of material. Decide the orientation before ordering, because it changes the roll count.

Blade direction matters too. All rolls should run with the blade lean in the same direction, or the sections will read as different shades of green in daylight.

Base preparation, the cost that decides whether it lasts

This is the part the calculator deliberately does not price, because it is not a function of area alone.

A yard that is already flat, well-draining bare dirt needs far less work than one with existing turf grass to strip, poor drainage requiring added base rock, or grading to fix pooling. Skimping here is the leading cause of turf that develops low spots, drainage problems and premature wear within a couple of seasons.

The financial case, honestly

The argument for turf is eliminating a recurring cost rather than a one-time saving: no irrigation water, no mowing, no fertiliser, no reseeding, no lawn service.

In a genuinely dry climate or under drought restrictions, the water saving alone compounds meaningfully over years — which is why some water utilities have offered turf conversion rebates. Check with yours before starting; a rebate can offset a real share of the project.

The upfront cost is substantial and usually exceeds what people expect going in. Running the full material calculation rather than eyeballing a per-square-foot rate is the difference between a realistic budget and a mid-project surprise.

The alternatives worth pricing alongside it

Heat is the drawback nobody mentions in the brochure

Synthetic turf gets substantially hotter than living grass in direct sun. Grass cools itself by transpiring water; plastic does not, so a turf surface in full summer sun can become genuinely uncomfortable underfoot and hot enough to matter for dogs and small children.

Shade, lighter-coloured infill and a rinse before use all help. None of them eliminate it. If the area is a play surface in a hot climate, this belongs in the decision alongside artificial turf cost rather than being discovered in July.

It is the strongest practical argument for a mixed approach: turf where the lawn-like look matters most, planted or shaded areas elsewhere, rather than converting an entire yard to a single surface.

Drainage and pets

Turf backing comes perforated at various drainage rates, and the number matters more than the marketing.

For a yard that only sees rain, standard perforation over a properly compacted permeable base is fine. For dogs, it is not — urine needs to pass through quickly and completely rather than pooling in the backing, and the infill choice interacts with this too, since organic infills can hold odour where coated sand does not.

Pet-specific turf systems exist and cost more. Retrofitting one after discovering the problem costs considerably more than specifying it initially, since it means lifting turf that has already been seamed and infilled.

Getting quotes you can actually compare

Because base preparation and turf material are priced so differently by different installers, the only way to compare bids meaningfully is an itemised breakdown: excavation depth, base material and compaction method, turf product and face weight, infill type and rate, and labour separately.

A bid noticeably cheaper than the others is usually cheaper for a reason, and the reason is almost always base depth. Ask specifically.

Lifespan expectations

Quality residential turf commonly carries an eight to fifteen year warranty and can outlast that with proper infill maintenance — brushing the pile periodically and topping up infill as it settles.

Heavy pet traffic, intense sun and inadequate infill all shorten real-world lifespan below warranty figures. Pets specifically require drainage-rated backing and periodic rinsing, which is worth confirming with the product spec before buying rather than after.
